Roots of Rock: Country music legend Johnny Cash | WYPR

Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He spoke to Fresh Air in 1997 about his career, from touring with Elvis to singing at prisons. He died in 2003. This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross. Next in our series of interviews on R&B, rockabilly and early rock 'n' roll, we have my 1997 interview with Johnny Cash, one of country music's most influential performers. He's in both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.I spoke with Cash when his autobiography was published. In the book, he said that after his hits in the '60s, he didn't sell huge numbers of records, but he kept making music he's proud of. But in 1994, he hooked up with record producer Rick Rubin, who had produced many rap and rock hits.Soon after we spoke in 1997, he announced that he had Parkinson's disease and was canceling the remainder of his book tour, which had just begun. His diagnosis was later changed to autonomic neuropathy, a disease affecting the nervous system. Cash died in 2003.JOHNNY CASH: (Singing) Hey, get rhythm. When you get the blues, come on, get rhythm. When you get the blues, get a rock 'n' roll feeling in your bones, put taps on your toes and get going. Get rhythm when you get the blues. A little shoeshine boy, he never gets low down.

When he is not ministering to his growing flock in person, he"You know when you do weather on TV, you help people plan their day, but now that I’m a minister, have my own church, I'm helping people not just plan their day, but I’m helping them plan their eternity,” says Cash. Jon admits he is making a fraction of what he used to in television, but finds his mission much more rewarding. At first Jon fought back! Flanked by his wife and attorney at a news conference in October of 2010, he accused his station of religious discrimination.“You have to be able to see the prize at the end of the road when you start a brand new church because it is a lot of work, a lot of sweat a lot of tears, but in the end when you see peoples’ lives change and you see the church grow, you know what, I'm on the right road,” says Cash.

Johnny Cash told me to be myself – and it changed my life, says Louisa Young | The Independent

The English author recalls a grumpy interview with the country music legend in the 1980s that set her on the path from journalism to fiction Young recalled interviewing the American singer in the 1980s and explained how a single piece of advice pushed her towards becoming a writer. Cash, she said, was initially gruff and reluctant to engage, describing the encounter as a “jukebox session”. But after realising she was a genuine fan, he began to warm to her.Young remembered Cash telling her: “You’ve gotta be who you are; whatever you are, you’ve gotta be it.” The words stuck with her. “I’m not a journalist,” she thought. “I want to write books and if I want to write books, I have to write books.Cash, meanwhile, remains immortalised in music history. His career spanned from 1954 until his death in 2003, producing more than 100 albums. In the 1990s and 2000s, he experienced a late renaissance working with producer Rick Rubin on the American Recordings.Acclaimed novelist Louisa Young has revealed that country music legend Johnny Cash played a pivotal role in shaping her career path.

A Yorkshire Pub with Jon Richardson: Comedian pumps his own cash into local pub to save it for community

Yorkshire comedian Jon Richardson is pumping his own cash in to save a local pub - and inviting viewers to watch him roll his sleeves up and get hands-on saving the community asset. More4 has commissioned an eight-part observational series - working title named A Yorkshire Pub with Jon Richardson - that will follow Jon as he joins forces with the local community to restore and re-open The Plough, which dates back to 1782.Peter Jones, Chairman, Fadmoor Community Pub Limited, added: “We have a lot of work to do to renovate this derelict pub, which has been closed for 14 years, and bring it back to life as a thriving community pub at the heart of this village.Jayne Stanger, Senior Commissioning Editor for Channel 4, added: “This is a dream commission: a much-loved comedian with a passion, a fantastic community brimming with brilliant characters, plus a mission to save one of the most-cherished British traditions – the humble local pub. Cheers to Jon, his Yorkshire pub, and the team at Full Fat TV capturing this special story for us.”Colette Foster, CEO of Full Fat TV, said: “At Full Fat TV, we'd been reading about the decline of pubs, however, it was the rise of community pubs halting that decline that really inspired us - locals buying pubs at risk of closure and repurposing them to offer services for the entire community as well as a pint. We were delighted when Jon said he wanted to invest in The Plough, allowing us to follow him and the Fadmoor community as they bring this special local in a spectacular part of Yorkshire back to life."

Johnny Cash vs the Feds: How the Man in Black Almost Wiped Out a Rare California Bird - American Songwriter

Did you know that in 1965, Johnny Cash accidentally started a forest fire that nearly killed off this rare species of bird? During his life, Johnny Cash battled an ostrich and released chicks in a hotel as a prank. Incidentally, birds have been a contributing character in some of Johnny Cash’s wildest stories, including this one.In his autobiography, Cash, the Man in Black stated that he and his nephew were on their way to fish when an oil leak dripped onto a hot wheel and started a small grass fire that spread rapidly and extensively. Cash acknowledged fleeing the crime scene at first, but he later confessed his culpability when law enforcement questioned him.In the biography Johnny Cash: The Life, author Robert Hilburn writes, per Fielder’s account, “Damon figured his uncle had started the fire to keep warm and in his drugged state had let it get out of control.” Upon learning about the fire, Fielder reportedly ran for help, after which a helicopter crew rescued his uncle. The fire started by Cash engulfed 508 acres of the Los Padres National Forest, a protected area and a sanctuary for endangered California condors, North America’s largest bird. Prior to the fire, there were 53 condors. When it ended, there were reportedly four.
